How to qualify leads with a quiz (step by step)

A practical guide to building a lead qualification quiz that automatically scores prospects and routes them to the right next step.

Why use a quiz to qualify leads?

Traditional lead qualification happens on a discovery call. You ask the same questions to every prospect, spend 30–45 minutes per call, and find out at the end whether they are actually a fit.

A quiz flips this. Prospects self-qualify before they ever reach your calendar. You only invest call time in people who have already demonstrated they are a good fit.

Step 1: Define your qualification criteria

Before you write a single question, decide what makes someone a HOT, WARM, or COLD lead for your business. Common criteria include:

  • Budget range
  • Company size or revenue
  • Timeline to purchase
  • Specific pain points or use cases
  • Decision-making authority

Assign a weight to each criterion. Budget and timeline typically matter most.

Step 2: Write your questions

Turn each qualification criterion into a quiz question. Keep the language conversational — prospects should feel like they are exploring a useful tool, not filling in a sales form.

Example: Instead of "What is your budget?" try "How much are you currently spending on lead generation tools per month?"

Step 3: Score your answer options

For each question, assign points to each answer option based on how much that answer indicates qualification:

  • Ideal answer: 10 points
  • Good answer: 7 points
  • Neutral: 4 points
  • Poor fit: 1 point

Step 4: Set your score thresholds

Decide the score bands for HOT, WARM, and COLD. A common starting point:

  • HOT: 70% or above
  • WARM: 40–69%
  • COLD: below 40%

Step 5: Build result pages per tier

Each tier needs its own result page with a relevant next step:

  • HOT: "You are a great fit. Book a 30-minute strategy call." → Calendly link
  • WARM: "You are on the right track. Join our email course." → Email opt-in
  • COLD: "Here is a free resource to get you started." → Content download

Step 6: Publish and distribute

Share your quiz link in email campaigns, social posts, and paid ads. Embed it on your website landing page. The quiz works as both a lead capture tool and a qualification engine.
